I think it totally understandable why these two radically different behaviors are often conflated and/or confused. This is about a person experiencing a paroxysm and not having the emotional intelligence to simmer down. This is not about explaining this phenomenon that has occurred since last patch. Toxicity is someone unable to accept their own frailty (whether in the moment/event or as an identity) and pathetically sharing that frustration with anyone capable of listening (this is why AllChat in competitive games is always a design failure). Toxicity is more related to a person's expectations exceeding their reality. Since many competitive games (MOBAs are a good example) are determined as much by how many errors the losing team committed as amazing plays the winning team accomplished, this tactic is widespread. The point is to get into the head of the opponent and through distraction, self-doubt, etc. Saying "I wrecked your mama last night!" is somewhere in the middle, depending on the circumstances and the people involved. You're making some pretty broad statements as though they're fact, when the reality is not so clear cut.įor me, trash talking typically crosses into toxicity when the talk leaves the context of the game. BTW, trash talking also acts as a bonding behavior, especially between males. Have you never played pickup basketball in your life? You'd be laughed off the court if you started getting all sensitive over trash talking in a casual bball game. This is all well and good with two adults who willingly applied for this as a profession, but when random members of the public are involved? The stated purpose of trash talk, outside of being a show for the audience, is to "get inside the opponent's head". So saying "you're going down!" to an opponent before a match is "toxicity"? Trash talking is toxicity unless it stays purely among friends. r/CoOpGaming - A community for co-op gaming r/xboxone - Xbox-specific subreddit for general Xbox news and discussion r/playstation, /r/PS4 & /r/PS5 - PlayStation-specific subreddits for general PlayStation news and discussion
